PROGRAM NOTE

HYPERDRIVE is inspired by the ever-present faster-than-light travel so common to the science fiction genre. For this work I wanted treat the chamber orchestra much like a spacecraft's warp engine, or gravity-drive, or more commonly, hyperdrive. The music is fast and quick to simiuoate faster-than-light travel and to create the illusion of light being bent, I've used glissandi to muscially illustrate those famous warped stars as a sound image. The work concludes with a reference to perhaps the most famous space-jump in film history, a 6-chord progression from John William's score to the Empire Strikes Back where the droid R2D2 activates the millenium falcon's hyperdrive allowing the intrepid heroes to escape Darth Vader and his attacking Star-Destroyer.
