THE THEME OF THE HSO & BEYOND THE MUSIC
Masterworks Overture is the theme Hawaiʻi Symphony Orchestra, and is performed at the start of every Beyond the Music performance. Foumai designs and host the newly launched education series Beyond the Music. These performances provide keiki to kupuna, a "Magic School Bus" approach to exploring how composers put together their great symphonies and the kaona (hidden messages) they contain. The series is presented as a comfortable, casual evening concert at the Moanalua Performing Arts Center, a curiosity incubator perfect for the family or those who want to know more about symphonic music!
ABOUT THE THEME
The theme is constructed to reflect the basic building blocks of almost all music composed in the common practice period, an ascending outline of a major-minor-7th chord, followed by an ornamental turn. As part of the HSO's branding package, this material forms the basis for variations (spin-offs) that feature the different families of the orchestra in solo and ensemble settings, the exploration of musical characters as a form of communication, and a survey of styles that introduce a basic but deep understanding of music appreciation, education, and composition.
